Natural meme selection favors information that lasts, that reproduces, that has a impact on the world.
Ecology is usually understood as the science of reducing our impact on the natural environment. But if we are memes, if we are information, shouldn't we be trying to maximise that impact? (or at least what natural selection would try to favor).
The thing here is, natural environment is not only a place to leave our footprint. It is also part of us, a part that could destroy us if we let it change too quickly.
Ecology is not (should be not) minimizing our impact, but maximizing the longevity of it. It is caring about the book we write our lives on. We want to write a long story, with a heavy ink, on a long lasting paper. That's what we are, what we do.
